A Crash Course in Achieving Your Goals

“When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don’t adjust the goals; adjust the action steps.”

– Confucius

So now that we’re a few weeks into the New Year we have to ask – how are those resolutions holding up?

The good news is we have some tips to help you adjust those action steps Confucius mentioned.

You’ll need five 3×5 BLUE index cards, a pen with BLUE ink, a little imagination and a sincere desire to shift your life into gear.

To get started, pick a specific goal or two in each of five key areas of your life:

  1. Mental/emotional
  2. Physical
  3. Social
  4. Spiritual
  5. Financial

For instance, maybe you’d like to be more socially active, and spend quality time with new friends who are interested in meditation or raw foods.  Or perhaps you feel that with a little more planning and budgeting, you could get on solid financial ground this year. Maybe this is the time in your life you feel emotionally strong enough to heal that rift with a parent or sibling. You might desire to bring more gratitude and joy into your spiritual life, too.

Focus on the specific goals for optimum health and wellness of your body, mind and spirit that your heart is telling you are most important.

Now, take those blue index cards, write one of the headings at the top of each card (Mental/Emotional, Physical, Social, etc.), and fill in a goal or two for that area on that card.

Twice a day – first thing in the morning, and right before you go to sleep – take out those five blue cards and read them, silently or aloud.  Be in the energy of those goals as you review them. Mentally see yourself taking the action steps towards fulfilling those goals.  Feel the excitement of getting closer and closer each day to achieving them.  Imagine how much richer, happier and more loving your life will be when you have made those goals your reality.

Writing those heart-felt intentions in blue ink on blue cards is a clever way of giving you even more opportunity to achieve them.  A University of British Columbia study showed the color blue increases our ability to think creatively.  As you’re reviewing your goals twice daily, that shot of blue will encourage your brain to visualize yourself actually doing the activities on the card, dramatically increasing the likelihood you’ll follow through.

The late neuroimmunologist Candace Pert, PhD, scientifically proved the ancient concept of “chakras,” or energy centers in the body.  Each of the seven major chakras influences a specific aspect of our lives, and has a corresponding color. The fifth chakra, which is located in the throat, is blue. This is the energy center which empowers us to communicate clearly, and use our will in a positive, focused way. By using both blue ink and blue cards, you’re getting a double dose of ‘will power’ energy every time you read your goals.

You can find some of Dr. Pert’s work, including Molecules of Emotion and Your Body is Your Subconscious Mind , in the OHI Store.
