Positive Prayer: About, Benefits & Positive Prayer Examples

Everyone prays.  But how do you know if you’re doing it “right”?  Should we express gratitude?  Can we ask for help?  Could we ask for change?  Do we ask for forgiveness?

When you want to improve yourself, you rely on positive thinking to keep you on task.  When positive thinking just doesn’t seem enough, you pray to let God do His work, eliciting change through you.

That is positive prayer.

What is Positive Prayer?

Positive prayer is prayer seeking God to bring us into accord with Him rather than emphasizing what we should do.  Negative prayers focus on what WE can do as mortals, whereas positive prayers open the spirit to accept whatever God calls us to do.  Positive prayer relinquishes control and makes the spirit more receptive to God’s messages through prayer.

Benefits of Practicing Regular Positive Prayer

While the practice of prayer seems straightforward, those of us looking to deepen our connection with God want to discover how to empower our prayers for everyday life.  We’re looking for the best way to communicate with God, to show him our willing and open heart.

  • Positive prayer helps you focus on what you want, as opposed to focusing on negative things that you don’t want.  For example, saying “Please God, help me not lose my temper”, might be better focused as “Please God, guide me as I speak to my co-workers today, and lead me to reach their heart with the words you want them to hear.”  You’re asking God to use you as a vessel in whatever way He sees fit.
  • Positive prayer helps create a greater connection with God.  By relinquishing our attempt to control the outcome, you can open your heart to God’s word.  You’re asking God to bring you closer to Him by revealing himself to you so you can follow.
  • Positive prayer helps provide peace and comfort during uncertain or trying times.  You’re asking God to lead the way with light so that there will be reassurance for all no matter what the circumstances.
  • Positive prayer helps us follow in God’s likeness.  You’re asking God to use you to the glory and praise of God.

Positive prayer is a form of meditation in which you communicate with God.  The benefits of meditation include reduced stress and anxiety, lower heart rate and blood pressure, slower breathing, and elimination of muscle tension.  When you use positive prayer as your form of meditation, you’ll build on all those physical and mental benefits of meditation to also feel:

  • Increased faith
  • Expanded belief in benevolence and altruism
  • Increased optimism and feelings of peace
  • Enhanced sense of purpose

Positive prayer can feel completely freeing, by surrendering any perceived control that we think we may assert over people and situations.  By revealing our complete and imperfect humanity and asking God to tap into the most genuine parts of ourselves to elicit change, positive prayer shows trust…in God…in faith…in humanity.

Positive prayer is simply taking a moment, and relaxing into the clarity and peace that comes from simply asking God to call us to do what he wants.

Benefits of Practicing Regular Positive Prayer

Everyone should develop their own conversation with God, but just to help you open your heart and not feel so tongue tied here are a few examples of everyday positive prayers…

Prayer for positive energy

Almighty Father, Cover me with your love and help me do things that bring glory and honor to your name.  This is my prayer, Lord, and I offer it through your Son, Jesus.  Amen.

Prayer for positive thinking

Dear Glorious Father, I pray that I will stay focused on You today.  I know that through my positive thinking and contentment, You will be glorified.  I want to honor You, Father, in all that I do.  I praise Your Holy Name!  Amen.

Morning prayer reminder

Dear Lord, Awaken me in body and spirit each day with a desire to meet with You and to hear You speak words of affirmation, assurance, and wisdom over my heart as I prepare to go into my day.  As the sun rises, may your love rise in my heart; a love that produces praise.  In Jesus’s Name, Amen.

Prayer for reaching others

Heavenly Father, I come before you, oh Lord, and drink in this moment of peace, that I may carry something of your hope, love, and joy today in my heart and share it with others in the ways you so choose.  Amen.

Prayer of gratitude

Dearest Almighty Father, may nothing separate me from You today.  Teach me how to choose only Your way today, so each step will lead me closer to You.  Help me to rest in the truth of Psalm 86:13, “Great is your love toward me.”  I consciously tuck Your whisper of absolute love for me into the deepest part of my heart.  Amen.

Prayer for opportunity

Dear Lord, I pray today that I will yield my spirit completely to You, that You may use me as You please.  I pray that you will use me as you see fit today for Your Glory.  Amen.

Prayer for direction

Lord, Please help me not to lean on my own understanding, but in everything acknowledge You, so that You can direct my words, thoughts, and actions.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Prayer of good morning

Good morning dear Lord!  This is the day that you have made.  I don’t know what this day holds, but I know that you hold the day.  Show me the way today and every day.  Amen.

Prayer of trust

Dear God, Help me trust in your plan for my life, trust in your goodness and faithfulness, and may I be a reflection of your light and truth to the world.

Prayer of guidance

My dear God, I will not ask where I am going today.  It is enough to know in the depths of my heart and soul that you are with me.  You are guiding me, and I am safe.  In Jesus’ name, I offer myself to you.  Amen.
